People have been enjoying the rectangular, deep dish, thick crust Sicilian pizza as early as the 1860s in Sicily, Italy. The Sicilian pizza has a unique taste which originates from its fresh ingredients sprinkled on a traditional recipe of thick crust baked on rectangular pan. It is often topped with onions, achovies, tomatoes, herbs, and strong cheese mixtures such as Toma, mozzarella and edam.
It is believed Sicilian Pizza, was popular on the western portion of the island as far back as the 1860's. Pizza was a popular dish in western Sicily by the mid 19th century. The version with tomatoes was not available prior to the 17th century.
It eventually reached America in slightly altered form with thicker crust and a rectangular shape
Cubes Pizza has adopted the traditional recipe along with their own twist of Canadian ingredients since its first 20 x 20 sq. ft. shop in 1987 in Streetsville, Ontario.
